In the 17th century, King Louis xiv decided to turn the hunting lodge of his father in Versailles in to a palace and it remained the residence of the royal family, where the destiny of Europe was decided over a century until the revolution of 1789.

Charters is an interesting hill town to visit. Close to Paris and the Loire chateau country and wine region, charters makes a nice stopover or day trip from those destinations.

Charters’ skyline is dominated by the gothic cathedral dedicated to Mary and built between 1194 and 1260. There are also some interesting museums in Charters devoted to fine arts, agricultural history, and stained glass production.

At the edge of the Fontainebleau forest, is the celebrated artists’ village of Barbizon, whose forest landscapes inspired the Barbizon school (1830-70).This group of Artists influenced the impressionists and included painters such as Corot, Millet, Danbiguy and Rousseau


Into the forest, you get the castle of Fontainebleau a favored residence of French kings for eight centuries. Then its off to Vaux le vicomte, Nicolas Fouquet’s master piece which inspired Louis 14th to build the palace of Versailles.

Giverny sits on the right bank of the river Seine. The village is surrounded by entrance free gardens, and best known as the location of impressionist painter, Claude Monet’s garden and house. Some of Monet’s most famous paintings, such as ‘water lily’ and ‘Japanese bridge’, were of his garden in Giverny.

Mont saint Michel is a rocky tidal island, situated one kilo meter off the country’s north coast at the mouth of the Canesnon River near Avranches.
